    I.                    Getting Set

     

    1.      Setting the English language version
    [US English]

    2.      Turning on and setting the spelling and grammar

    3.      Page settings
    [Margins: TOP, BOTTOM, RIGHT 20mm, LEFT 35mm; HEADER 15mm  A4]

    4.      Font type and size
    [Times New Roman 12 (text) 14 (
    subheading) 16 (section heading)]

    5.      Paragraph and line spacing

    [Line Spacing 1.5;  Leave a line between paragraphs.]

    II.                 Editing

     

    6.       Headings and body text
    [Indent subheadings.  NO indent for body text.
    Number sections and subheadings 1. and 1.1, 1.2 etc.]

    7.       Punctuation
    [Two spaces after a full stop.  One space after ,:; No space after “n, or before n.”]

    8.       Inserting tables and graphs
    [Label ALL tables, graphs and photographs: Table 1, Figure 1, Plate 1.]

    9.       Inserting a header
    [Insert your title and name as a header]

    10.   Inserting endnotes
    [Use endnotes for all references]

    11.   Tidying up (page breaks etc.)
    [Check everything after you have finished]

    12.   Checking grammar and spelling

    13.   Using Chinese in an English paper
    [Don’t unless you have to!]

    III.               The layout

     

    14.   Title page
    Your paper should include a title page following the example I give here
    TITLE
    AUTHOR
    STUDENT NUMBER
    DATE OF SUBMISSION
    NUMBER OF WORDS (not including abstract and keywords)
    There should be no page number on the title page

     

    15.   The second page
    Type the title again (at the top)
    Type the abstract
    Key Words
    include a page number on this page (1)

    Start the introduction on a new page

     

    16.   The main body

    17.   The references
    References should be the last page AFTER the endnotes.
    References should be arranged in alphabetical order
    Do not include references that you do not refer to in your text / endnotes.
    Use the following format:
    Book
    Surname, Initial (year) Title; Publisher: Place
    Website
    Surname, Initial (year) Title; retrieved from website xxxxxxx on [date] (the date you found the site)
    Newspaper
    Surname, Initial (year) Title; retrieved from newspaper name: [date of newspaper]

     

    18.   Saving the document: filename; file type
    Nathan.doc

    19.   The deadline

    Midnight, January 5th 2007.  If received after this date, or not received, you will fail the course.
